Epictetus (c. 50–138) was a Stoic philosopher born in Hierapolis, Ancient Rome. He is best known for his teachings on ethics and the nature of human freedom, which were recorded by his student Arrian in works such as the "Discourses" and the "Enchiridion." Epictetus spent much of his later life in Nicopolis, where he established a school of philosophy.
